Associazione Italiana Somelier 2011

The Montepulciano grape is a difficult beast to tame, it ripens slowly (a cause of many problems), it often presents aromas of the wilderness which are not always acknowledged, it sometimes has a hard to handle alcoholic exuberance and, dulcis in fundo, roaring tannins which can, at times, be untamable. However, here on our estate, this grape holds no mysteries and Anghelos is the proof. This important wine with its pleasant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (which, with regard tannins is no joke) and its touch of Sangiovese, has maintained its best-in-class position at the height of our tasting for many years.

ANGHELOS 2008

Vivid purple. Complex bouquet, almost stratified: initial floral embrace gives way to aromas of mulberry jam, ground cocoa, whiffs of vanilla and flurries of scented powder. Every sip is fantastic, each component perfectly blended and enhanced with a tannin which provides pure flavour. Aged for one year in wooden barrels. Perfect with spiced duck breast.

ROSSO PICENO SUPERIORE ORO 2008

Glowing ruby with rich, sought-after aromas: forest fruits, dark tobacco, graphite and spices dried in slow, relentless succession. Deep complex, noble tannins, sweet in its long fruity finale. Aged for one year and a year in stainless-steel casks. Perfect with roast lamb and mint sauce.
ROSSO PICENO SUPERIORE 2008
Ruby. Bouquet spangled with bluebells, cherry syrup, sap and paprika. Beautiful movement, perfect coherence, laudable purity. Aged for 15 months in wooden barrels of various sizes. Perfect with pheasant with tomatoes and olives.

OFFIDA PECORINO 2009

Fragrance of honeydew melon, plums, thyme and subtle minerality. Strong personality, full and rich, soft and warm yet pleasantly drinkable. Perfect with chicken casserole.

PRATO GRANDE 2009

Summery scent of cammomile and lime trees, hay and tropical fruit. Each sip proclaims sapid notes,  nicely balanced. Perfect with pasta with sea snails.

FALERIO 2009

50% Trebbiano – 25% Pecorino – 25% Passerina...Floral, vaguely smoked. Lively and harmonic somewhat toasted. Perfect with Quiche Lorraine.

ROSSO PICENO 2009

Aromas of vaguely wild vegetables, balanced on the palate with gentle tannins. Perfect with cheese  omelette and rocket salad.

SLOW WINE 2011

STORIES OF ITALIAN WINES AND VINES

HISTORY – The estate was established by Alighiero De Angelis in the 1950's. Initially, production was dedicated to loose wines sold mainly in cisterns. The arrival of Quinto Fausti (son-in-law of Alighiero De Angelis), in 1985, saw the growth of the vineyards and the expansion of the winery and, towards the end of the 1990's, the abandon of loose wine sales and the production of fine bottled wine.

VINES – From the church of Santa Maria della Rocca in Offida, which stands on the very edge of a ridge, the view of the vineyards in Contrada Sanita' is breathtaking. The perfect East-south-east exposition and the rich clay earth are the habitat of the De Angelis vineyards, which produce white grapes in the lower valley and red grapes toward the top of the hillside. These modern vineyards – which since 2009 have a planting density of 3,500 plants per hectare - are organically farmed.

WINES – Quinto Fausti produces a vast range of wines: fruity richness and grand structure for the reds; fragrance and freshness for the whites. The compact, dense and deep ANGHELOS 2007, persistent on the palate with its powerful and dynamic balance of fruit and spices. The impeccable ROSSO PICENO SUPERIORE 2007, fresh, sunny, intriguing with its smooth, light  taste which is a true invitation to drink a little more. The complex ROSSO PICENO SUPERIORE ORO 2007, stratified on the palate and willing to move slowly towards higher levels of complexity.
